Shri Chanchalapathi Dasa, Vice-Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, received the prestigious award, accompanied by Mr Bhawani Singh Shekhawat - CEO - The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK and Europe, at a ceremony held in Bristol.
This award recognises people or projects that change the way society looks at produce, processes, and consumption or even simply the way we think about food, for the better. 2019 marks the third year since the inception of the 'Global Food Champion' award. TAPF were selected from nominations sent in by the World Service audience from every continent and were awarded the prize by an international panel of judges.
With multiple initiatives already afoot across London in Boroughs like Harrow and Brent, as well as further north in Leicester, both Mr Shekhawat and Mr Dasa reiterated their commitment to serving children and others affected by food insecurity across the UK.
Appreciating Akshaya Patra's endeavours in feeding millions of children in India, Mr Stephen Titherington, Senior Commissioning Editor, BBC World Service said "Akshaya Patra is a great winner, and we’re so glad the competition has had such support from the public and from the judges. The need to understand the difficulties for many of finding enough to eat is crucial; understanding the economics and the politics of food is a vital part of understanding the world."
